Bellin earns Kudos for Stroke Care

EmailEmailPrintPrint

Bellin Health recently earned recognition from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get with the Guidelines” stroke program for providing superior service in the treatment of stroke patients.

Bellin joins 15 other hospitals statewide scheduled to be featured in the 2010 “America’s Best Hospitals” issue of U.S. News & World Report. Bellin also will be recognized at an International Stroke Conference scheduled for February of 2010.

The Green Bay-based health system earned the Silver Award recognition through the “Get with the Guidelines” program, designed to ensure that hospitals consistently care for stroke patients following the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations.

Hospitals are recognized if they can sustain 85 percent or higher in standardized stroke care achievement measures, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s recommendations.

“We’re thrilled that the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association chose the ‘America’s Best Hospitals’ issue of U.S. News & World Report to recognize Bellin for our achievements in stroke care,” said Kathy Polum, stroke care coordinator at Bellin. “This honor is indicative of our continued commitment to providing our patients, their families and the overall community with the best and most up-to-date stroke care possible.”

My husband is a stroke

My husband is a stroke survivor, and in 2008 he had 6 weeks of the best inpatient stroke rehab at Bellin Hospital. The therapists were excellent and it was a sad day when he was discharged to go to a nursing home for more stroke recovery. See http://www.strokesurvivorblog.com/2008/04/04/saying-good-bye-to-bellin/
One of his nurses from the rehab unit still stays in contact with us. Congrats on your award...it is well deserved!

Thank-you so much Kathy for

Thank-you so much Kathy for sharing your wonderful story.

Hi Kelly, My husband and I

Hi Kelly,

My husband and I have been looking for a good stroke support group in the Green Bay area. The only one I know of isn't a good fit for us...it's more a social gathering for much older people, and they rarely talk about the issues that recent stroke survivors struggle with.

I heard about the Rocky Mountain Stroke Association in Littleton, CO and the wonderful Stroke Therapy Groups they have there. Is there any possibility of Bellin sponsoring such a program or group? It would be so beneficial for stroke survivors to go to a group where they can deal with the emotional aspect of stroke.

Another type of group that is needed is a stroke specific Caregiver's Support Group. Again, there is not one that I know of in the Green Bay area.

I hope some consideration will be given to this idea because this is an extension of stroke care. Thanks so much for being a good sounding board.

Kathy
