EmailEmailPrintPrint

Are you in a high strain job? Defined as a demanding job, with time pressures and little opportunity for decision making or person growth.

Do you consider your job to have active job strain? This means high-demand work with with a high sense of control.

MD consult reports that job-stress women are faced with increased cardiovascular risk.

Women who report high psychological job strain have a 40% increased risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a large, 10-year prospective study. (1)

Women with active job strain had a 60% increase in total cardiovascular events compared with those reporting low job strain. This was reported at the American Heart Association's annual scientific sessions.

The take home message here, is that stress plays a significant role in the over health of women. This is an important concept to discuss with your provider when evaluating your risk of heart and vascular disease. Lifestyle changes like being physically active, having a social support system, and relaxation techniques can help to reduce the negative effects of stress on your health.
