For a healthier diet, here are some examples of easy switches and smart food choices.
Meat, Fish and Poultry
Limit:

  • fatty meats
  • sausage
  • bacon
  • organ meats
  • tuna packed in oil
  • bologna
  • hot dogs
  • salami
  • lunch meats

Smart substitutes: lean cuts of beef

  • rump
  • round
  • flank steak
  • london broil
  • lamb
  • pork
  • poultry (no skin)
  • trim off all fat
  • opt for fish and poultry more often
  • tuna packed in water
  • sliced turkey or chicken

 
Eggs and Dairy
Limit:

  • whole eggs
  • sour cream
  • mayonaise
  • american or cheddar cheese
  • cream cheese
  • whole or 2% milk

 
Smart Substitute:

  • egg whites
  • plain, low fat yogurt
  • frozen yogurt
  • ice milk
  • sherbert or sorbet
  • low-fat cheeses, like ricotta, mozzarella (made with skim milk)
  • skim or 1% milk
