Sudden Cardiac death in teens

EmailEmailPrintPrint

Every year you read about young, healthy teens and adolescents dying after physical exertion.  How do you keep your child from being one of them?

The most common cause of sudden death in young athletes in the United States is a heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).  A child with HCM will appear healthy until he or she suddenly collapses from strenuous activity.  There are also other undiagnosed heart conditions that can cause sudden death.  While there are usually no symptoms yet this is oftentimes fatal, there are tests that can improve the chances of uncovering these conditions.  Bellin Health, the physicians of Cardiology Associates of Green Bay, and the Cardiac Arrhythmias Research and Education (C.A.R.E.) Foundation are offering a free screening that will include an electrocardiogram (ECG), interpreted by a cardiologist.

“The test is painless and available for free to young people through Bellin Health’s annual HeartStrong program on April 17,” says Dr. James Rider, a cardiologist at Cardiology Associates and founder of this event.  “If you are the parent of a high school athlete or physically active high school student and want to evaluate the risk of these heart conditions, you should consider this screening.”
