Chicago Museum's Interactive Heart

EmailEmailPrintPrint

Get an up-close look at the human heart like you’ve never seen before when Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry debuts its newest permanent exhibit: YOU! The Experience, opening Oct. 8.  The centerpiece of the exhibit is a 13-foot high and eight-foot wide interactive structure that uses cutting-edge technology to virtually and physically re-create the human heart (see photo below).

The heart’s detailed visuals and realistic surround-sound environment blend together to create a full 360-degree experience. You can easily manipulate the heart to beat in time with your own by placing one hand on a sensor. The heart allows you to highlight specific features and elements of the organ, as well as control the view of the heart from exterior to interior. Cardiac functions that would otherwise be invisible, like the heart’s electrical signals and blood flow patterns, become stunningly visible in front of the guest—making for an unforgettable and illuminating experience.

Other YOU-nique parts of this exhibit include:

  • test your basketball moves with a virtual coach
  • play Mind Ball, a game of "competitive relaxation"
  • examine real human embryos
  • diagnose and treat medical conditions with the Human Patient Simulator
  • create a list of personal life goals
  • preview your future with a digital glimpse at how you might look 25 years from now.

YOU! The Experience opens October 8, 2009 in Abbott Hall.
