Symptoms of PAD

EmailEmailPrintPrint

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) occurs when arteries become blocked in the legs or arms. It's a silent killer, because often there are no symptoms. Some people may experience:

  • Pain, fatigue or heaviness in the calf, thigh, or buttocks area. This appears after walking and is relieved by rest.
  • As the disease progresses, it can cause intense pain and non-healing foot ulcers. You may have pain in your legs or feet that wakes you from sleep.
  • Numbness, coldness and tingling in the lower legs and feet. The color may have changed in your feet from pink, to pale or slightly blue and one leg may have a cooler temperature than the other.
  • Poor nail growth, loss of hair on legs and feet.

Just like clogged arteries in the heart, clogged arteries in the legs means you are at risk for having a heart attack or stroke. There are about 8-12 million people in the United States that are effected by this disease process.
