Are you in the Zone?

 If you have been told that you have heart failure, follow these heart failure zones. GREEN is good, YELLOW is a caution area, and RED is the danger zone; as far as symptoms go. Your goal is to keep your symptoms in the green zone.

 

GREEN ZONE:  All Clear

If:

Your goal weight:                             

Ÿ    No shortness of breath

Ÿ    No swelling

Ÿ    No weight gain

Ÿ    No chest pain

Ÿ    Maintaining your normal activity level

Then:

Ÿ     Your symptoms are under control

Ÿ     Continue taking your meds as ordered

Ÿ     Continue daily weights

Ÿ     Follow low salt diet

Ÿ     Keep all provider appointments

YELLOW ZONE:  Caution

Work closely with your health care team if you are going into the yellow zone.

If:

Ÿ    Weight gain of three or more pounds

Ÿ    Dry, hacking cough

Ÿ    Swelling of legs, ankles

Ÿ    Increase in shortness of breath with activity

Ÿ    Increase in the number of pillows needed

Ÿ    Dizziness or light-headedness

Ÿ    Belly swelling or loss of appetite

Ÿ    Wheezing or chest tightness at rest

Ÿ    Need to sit in chair to sleep

Then:

Ÿ     Your symptoms may indicate that you need a change in your meds

Ÿ     Call your provider

RED ZONE:  Danger

Call 911 or go to the Emergency Department if you are in the Red Zone.

If:

Ÿ    Shortness of breath that doesn’t go away at rest

Ÿ    Chest pain that doesn’t go away or is returning often

Ÿ    Passing out

Ÿ    Confusion

Then:

Ÿ     This indicates that you need to be seen by a provider right away

Ÿ     Call 911 or go to the Emergency Department
