It all adds up to your risk

By answering a few questions, we can determine you risk of cardiac disease.

This risk assessment tool uses information from the Framingham Heart Study to predict your risk of developing a heart attack (or possibley a stoke) in the next 10 years. This tool is designed for people aged 20 years and older without known heart disease and who do not have diabetes.

The risk factors included in the Framingham calculation are age, cigarette smoking, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure measurement and treatment for high blood pressure. Point values are calculated based on each of these risks. All you have to do is answer the questions and add up the total points.

3. What is your total cholesterol (mg/dL)? Total cholesterol is the sum of all the cholesterol in your blood. The higher your total cholesterol, the greater your risk for heart disease.

4. What is your HDL (good) cholesterol (mg/dL) High density lipoprotein (HDL) is the ‘good’ cholesterol. HDL carries cholesterol in the blood from other parts of the body back to the liver, which leads to its removal from the body. So HDL helps keep cholesterol from building up in the walls of the arteries.

5. What was the top number (the systolic pressure) in your most recent blood pressure reading?

Now add up all of the points from each question and find the total below.  Your total number will equal a %, to determine your risk of heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years.

If your score equals less than 10%:

Great job! You are at LOW risk

If your score equals 10-20%:

You are at MODERATE risk. It is important to control your blood pressure, get your cholesterol down, and stop smoking.

If your score equals greater than 20%:

CAUTION! You are at HIGH risk. Please talk to your Doctor about controlling your risks with medication and review the warning signs of heart attack and stroke.
