Train Smarter, Not Harder!

Not an original statement, but very original in practice. While I huff and puff and sweat all over the carpet to keep up to the pacer, my nephew sits on the couch and wins. He quickly figured out that to beat the Wii in a running race, you didn’t have to run at all, you simply had to shake the controller really fast.
Train smarter, not harder…

In an effort to catch up, I run faster and harder and quickly become fatigued. He sits and expends little energy, and is ever ready to "run" another race. My first approach is to view this as lazy, but when I step back and think about it, this technique is brilliant!
Run smarter, not harder…

How many of you can confess to being mileage junkies? Quantity over quality? The more the better? How many out there have finished a run in pain, fatigued, dehydrated just to complete a predetermined distance? I admit it; I am also raising my hand.

Yes it is true that to get good at running, the majority of your training time needs to be dedicated to running. However to become a better runner we need to consider some additional factors. As you train, are the right muscles getting stronger, are you maintaining mobility and flexibility, are you becoming a more efficient runner, or in your training to get "better" are you actually getting worse?

How do you know if your training will lead to you to a personal best, or lead you to personal injury?
